That Was Quite Interesting…

January 18, 2011

I had a very satisfying day at work today. We have a relatively new gang of trainees in at the moment and for the first time today we really got stuck into some classroom work.

Up until now we have mainly been filling them in on the qualities and values of our fine organisation and introducing them to the standards required of an RAF Police trainee. Mostly by the usual military tactics of shouting and cleaning/pressing all stationary objects.

Today in the classroom we started to introduce them to the parallel universe that is the Theft Act 1968, Criminal Attempts and Offences Against the Person. Most people’s initial reaction to hearing or reading these words will be one of supreme disinterest, but today we achieved some learning and fairly freeform discussion.

During what, at first glance, appears to be an arid, Powerpoint desert of a lesson about the offence of theft we managed to discuss questions of metaphysics (can electricity be stolen?) and morality (is keeping pheasants for shooting a humane thing to do?). During the Assault lesson we discussed Police use of force, the movie ‘Scum’ and issues of equality relating to sexuality.

This little group of individuals suddenly gelled and lifted what could have been death by a thousand Powerpoints into a genuinely engaging day. As someone who dabbles in educating people, days like this are as good as it gets. Rather than pulling a herd of struggling, reluctant learners up a legislation cliff, I just had to start a stampede and give the occasional verbal prod to keep it moving (and away from the cliff).

I have been an RAF Policeman for 13 years now and I’ve had good days and terrible days. Today was a great day. I’ve had days like it before, but this one was a bit of a surprise. It was like something out of those corny TV ads for becoming a teacher and I must admit it felt good. To see people almost teaching themselves was pretty damn cool. I just hope I can do it again tomorrow.

Wonderful.. Sounds like a great day. Now I feel really crap for not asking how your day went – sad that I had to read it here! Nevertheless, fingers crossed for more great days like this 🙂 x

Don’t worry about it. There’s none of us perfect – least of all me 🙂
